Join us for an orienteering course held at the Brewster Heath Preserve on May 3rd! Registration and starts will commence at 9:30, with the last starts at 11:00. Courses will be available for all skill levels, even those who never thought they could read a map. The easiest course, white, will be all on-trail, and the next most difficult, yellow, takes you about 50 yards off-trail. Harder courses will be available for the more adventurous. If you enjoy a course, it may be possible to move on to another one that is a bit more difficult.
The start area will be at the Brewster Heath Preserve parking lot, with overflow parking at Crescent Lake School. To get to the meeting site, turn onto McManus Rd off Rt. 28 near the high school. After passing the playing fields, bear left onto the dirt road for about 100 yards. You may want to park at the Crescent Lake School parking lot and walk to the start.
There will be people there to instruct you on how to use the map and how to go from point to point on the course. Compasses are available at the meet site, although they may not be needed for the easy courses. Come enjoy the beauty of the Brewster Heath Preserve, learn the basics of outdoor navigation, and have fun finding orange and white markers in the woods.
The cost for white and yellow courses is $5 for an individual or a group. Pre-registration is not required, but you can fill out a liability waiver before arrival to save time at on-site registration. The waiver and additional information can be found by visiting upnoor.org (which is the website of Up North Orienteering) and then clicking on the “beginners” tab. More information can be found by calling Peter Goodwin at 603-998-3582.
