There are optimists and pessimists. The earliest date is March 13 and the latest is May 1st. Last year, the person who guessed the latest date won. Who will it be this year?
A recent core taken in a bay indicated 22 inches of ice with 6 inches of snow on top. It looks like it might take It awhile for the ice to go out. There was a big snowstorm in April last year that prolonged the thaw and made the lake surface reflective. The timing of ice out is variable because it is related to a few factors: wind, rain, and sun. The recession of ice really requires the combination of all three factors. As the sun gets higher in the sky, it is becomes a bigger factor, but once areas open up and the winds kick up they become the dominating factor. Those of us at the lake are looking forward to watching the ice leave our lakes as spring arrives.
