The Water Summit on May 11th- Learn about Cyanobacteria

Concerned about cyanobacteria – the family of bacteria that is causing a looming threat to lake health and our local economy? Then you should attend the third annual Wolfeboro Water Summit sponsored by the Wentworth Watershed Association. It will be held on Saturday, May 11, at The Great Hall of Wolfeboro Town Hall from 9 to noon, with doors opening at 8:30 am. The event is free and open to the public.

At Water Summit 3 you’ll hear how stormwater runoff is one of the leading causes of increased algae blooms in our region’s lakes. Dr. James Haney, professor of biological sciences at the University of New Hampshire, will present an overview of this development.

Learn what is being done to detect, test, and prevent cyanobacteria outbreaks and to notify the public when blooms are taking place in Wolfeboro’s water bodies. Become part of the solution by signing up to become a trained cyanobacteria monitor and/or water quality tester on Lake Wentworth, Crescent Lake, Lake Winnipesaukee, Sargent’s Pond, or Rust Pond.

At last year’s well-received Wolfeboro Water Summit 2, attendees learned about what is being done to mitigate stormwater runoff in order to help protect surface waters in Wolfeboro. Engineers showcased a number of best-practice stormwater mitigation solutions that have been installed in town, how sites for these installations were identified, and how the projects were designed and carried out. Attendees also learned about practical, simple solutions that they could use on their properties to infiltrate stormwater before it reaches surface waters in town.

This year’s summit will continue to raise awareness about threats to the community’s economy and quality of life, and, since everyone can play a part in prevention, the summit will explain how volunteers can take action to combat cyanobacteria in coordination with area lake associations.
