Lots of People Enjoyed the History of the Islands Paddle Saturday 7/20/19

The 2019 Lake Wentworth Island Heritage Paddle on Saturday July 20th was most memorable for over a dozen paddlers in spite of the extreme heat! Warm breezes off the water kept them comfortable as they made their way out to the Sister Islands to learn about island life, history and lore.

Bob Spear, Becky Arnold and John Ouhrabka spoke to the paddlers as they floated around the islands. Island dwellers enjoy a simpler way of life and strive to protect their serene setting. They deal with an enormous amount of “hauling”, bringing in supplies, removing trash, and arranging for transportation of visiting family and friends. There were accounts of the first homes dating back to the late 1800’s and even a hotel on Loon Island.

Paddlers were also treated to a view of a pair of loons with their two brand new chicks.

Many thanks to Carol & Zeke Bly for leading this tour and to the island hosts for welcoming the paddlers into their unique setting!
